OLLI Council

MARIE BASKERVILLE – Bristol  
Marie Baskerville is a native of Waterbury, Connecticut and a former educator in the city.  With over 30 years experience in the areas of Career and Vocational Specialist, Guidance and Counseling and Supervision & Administration, she holds a Masters degree from University of Hartford and a sixth year in Educational Administration and Supervision from Southern Connecticut State University.  

With an accomplished background in dance, Marie is the proud founder and Director of the Unity Dance Ensemble and is celebrating 15 years as a performing arts program for children ages 5 to 18 years of age. The Ensemble performs at various venues; schools, organizations, museums, etc. in and around Connecticut.  Marie has received awards for her accomplishments as an artist and her contribution to the community.

Marie is a member of numerous organizations and clubs in the community and recently worked with Brian Chapman on the opening of the Osher Life Long Learning project, Silver Bells "Been Rich All My Life".  

Marie is currently a resident of Bristol, CT.

 

KAY V. BERGIN – Waterbury
Kay V. Bergin is a longtime Waterbury native and resident. Her education began in local public schools; undergraduate work at Central Connecticut State University where she earned a BS and at Wesleyan University with an MALS.  Her teaching career began at Naugatuck High School where she chaired the Business Department and continued when she was one of the first faculty members appointed at Mattatuck Community College (now NVCC.)

Leaving academia, she became the first Executive Director of the then new Connecticut Permanent Commission on the Status of Women and in this role, worked diligently to eliminate gender discrimination in employment, housing, finance, legal rights, etc.  Her appointment as Deputy Banking Commissioner by the late Governor Ella T. Grasso provided a regulatory role over state-licensed financial institutions.  Her commitment to feminism continued with the publication of a widely-distributed brochure on equal rights for women in credit; and she testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking on the subject of sex discrimination in banking.

Leaving Connecticut, she became New York Regional Director for Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation and developed Neighborhood Housing Services programs in many cities and towns in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.  Returning to her hometown, she brought together her interests in finance and housing and opened offices for Consumer Credit Counseling Services in Waterbury, Torrington, and Danbury.  Before retiring, she provided counseling for first-time homebuyers for Neighborhood Housing Services in Waterbury.

Over the years, she has served on many state and local boards; ran unsuccessfully for state office; is presently a Board member and treasurer for the Western Connecticut Area Agency on Aging; a member of the Town Committee for Waterbury's Independent Party; as president of an Investment Club. And she is pleased to be a member of the OLLI Advisory Board and looks forward to the success of this new program at UConn.

 

SUSAN BRIA – Southbury
Susan Bria grew up in Waterbury and graduated from St. Mary's Elementary School, Waterbury Catholic High, and the University of Connecticut.  She now lives in Southbury, Connecticut. She taught English and writing at Naugatuck High School from 1963 – 1998 and was chairperson of the English department from 1985 – 1996.

Since her retirement in 1998, Susan has self-published From the Heart of a Caregiver: A Spiritual Journey (a book) and Grandma Is Going to Live with Grandpa (an audio book for children and adults) as well as some of her poetry. Her latest book, The Road to Calabria, was published in October 2006 and was reviewed in the winter newsletter of The National Italian American Foundation.

The Road to Calabria reads like a novel but is the factual account of Susan’s travels to Italy which develop into the discovery of Calabria, the region of Southern Italy where her family originated.

After she retired, Susan tried out a number of things which interested her. She volunteered as the Connecticut representative for The National Family Caregivers' Association and wrote book reviews for their quarterly newsletter for approximately two years. She then worked on her neighbor’s committee to obtain a grant for The Money Follows the Person, from April - October 2006.

Susan’s interests are reading, writing, travel, ballroom dancing, swimming and gardening.  She has agreed to attend the OLLI National Meeting in April 2007 and bring back ideas and information to the OLLI Council.

 

ARTHUR BRIEGER – Southbury
Arthur Brieger holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from CCNY, a Master of Science degree from New Paltz State Teachers College, and a Doctor of Education degree from Columbia University in Curriculum and Teaching. He has twenty-eight years of Public School service: three years as an Elementary Teacher; eight years as an elementary Principal; ten years as Director of Elementary Education; seventeen years as Assistant Superintendent, and finally, Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.

In his free time, Arthur has traveled to the USSR, Britain, France, Israel, Greece, Italy, Central America, Alaska, China and beyond.

Since Arthur’s retirement in 1983, he has had a home in Maine, a log cabin in Vermont,  a barn and 51 acres in Treadwell, New York  (building the cabin and barn were family building projects), and a home in Sayville, Long Island. Arthur is participating in an LLI in Hilton Head, SC and will return to the area in April 2008.

 

WILLIAM COURTLAND – Southbury
William Courtland LTM is a teacher, lecturer and workshop facilitator who researches Chinese Medical theory and its relationship to mind and body. He is currently a faculty member at the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy at Westport where he teaches Acupressure and the Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine. William is also a Nationally Certified Licensed Massage Therapist who maintains a private practice within which he integrates Massage and Acupressure.

At present he is writing a book that examines Chinese Medical theory, Acupressure and Massage and their therapeutic effects on emotional and physical wellbeing.

 

JOHN DECESARE – Waterbury
John DeCesare is a retired Senior Industrial Engineer and Coordinator of Vocational Education for the Wolcott Public Schools.  He was a 28-year Adjunct Faculty member at Naugatuck Valley Community College in the specialty of Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering.  He is currently Chairman of Public Relations for The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and serves as a Council Member. 

John holds an A.S. degree from the University of New Haven, a B.B.A. degree from Fairfield University, an M.B.A. and M.S. degrees from the University of Bridgeport, and a Sixth Year Certificate from Southern Connecticut State University. Additionally, he has earned Administrative/Supervision Educational Certification.

 

CLAUDIA DEPALMA – Waterbury
Claudia DePalma is a native of Waterbury and is a semi-retired Textbook Manager for the UConn Co-op Bookstore in Waterbury. She previously worked as the Co-op Store Manager for 28 years.  Prior to her devoted position at the Co-op, Claudia spent 10 years as Secretary in the Engineering Department of The A. W. Haydon Company. This is where she met her husband of 42 years, Richard.

After marriage, her commitment to motherhood became her first and foremost priority. She spent long hours teaching her two children the important values of life, such as morals, religion, independence and manners. She developed many enjoyable hobbies.  Some of her favorite pastimes still today are cooking and baking, making homemade pasta and gardening.  She delights in sharing and teaching these skills to the neighborhood children.

Claudia also enjoys collecting post cards and cherishes her time with her two granddaughters – who were both lucky enough to acquire her striking red-hair. She is a proud and active member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.  Some of her accomplishments include making an oriental wool rug and helping complete an addition to their home. She also enjoys walking and spoiling her family, including the two dogs. Claudia has become an active member of OLLI and currently is chair of the hospitality committee.

 

JAMES F. FARNHAM – Woodbury  
James F. Farnham is Professor Emeritus of Literature at Fairfield University.  He holds a Ph.D. from Case-Western Reserve University and held post-doctoral fellowships at Yale in Cognitive Anthropology and Judaic Studies. 

His course in Literature of the Holocaust initiated Judaic Studies at Fairfield.  He has taught Existential Literature and American Romanticism and has published studies of Holocaust Literature, Hawthorne, Melville, Faulkner, and Flannery O'Connor.

 

ROBERT JOHN GRADY - Watertown
Bob Grady was born in Waterbury, attended local schools and graduated from Sacred Heart High School, where he was co-captain of the Championship swimming team. He then spent four years in the U.S. Navy as an aviation electronic technician.

Bob holds a BA in English and Psychology from UConn, a Master’s in Education from Central Connecticut State University, and a Certificate in Advanced Graduate Studies in Counseling from Fairfield University. He also attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.  He also received a Master Certification in Neuro-Linguistic Programming from Eastern Institute in Princeton, New Jersey.

Bob taught in Buck’s Hill School in Waterbury for three years, was part of an innovative teaching program at the sixth grade level in Watertown public schools, and then spent thirty-five years teaching at Watertown High School.

He has been a member of curriculum committees and evaluation teams in education and has also been active in local politics, as well as participating in community projects. He has held offices in the local teachers’ associations and was President of the Watertown Education Association for the last seven years of his teaching career.

Since retirement, Bob has journeyed to forty-seven of the contiguous states, Washington being the only exception. He has also traveled extensively throughout South East Asia, and visits Singapore where his daughter teaches at Nanyang University.  Bob is editor of the OLLI Newsletter.

 

KATHRYN HOULIHAN - Southbury
Originally from Taunton, Massachusetts,  Kathryn received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brown University.  Although she has a background in marketing research and financial planning, she most recently held the position of Associate Director of Financial Aid at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport, CT.  Prior to that she held positions in financial aid administration at Fairfield University in Fairfield and Business Careers Institute in Waterbury, CT.

Since her retirement in early 2007, she has become an active member of OLLI, serving as co-chair of the Membership Committee. In April, 2008, she will represent OLLI at UConn at the national conference of Osher Institutes in Phoenix, AZ. 

Kathryn also volunteers as a facilitator in the family program at The Cove, an organization which helps children and teens to cope with bereavement issues.  Currently she is co-facilitating a Trauma, Loss and Transition program for The Cove at a Bridgeport middle school.  

Having lived in Connecticut since 1980, she recently moved to Heritage Village in Southbury, where she is a member of  the New Villagers, the Computer Club and the grants sub-committee of the Heritage Village Long-Range Planning Committee. She also serves as Vice-President of the Celtic Connections Club.

 

ALLYNE KADISH – Waterbury 
Allyne (Pij) Kadish
Allyne Kadish is a Waterbury native, having attended local schools and returned to the Overlook area after attended the University of Pennsylvania. She is currently a board member of the Anti-Defamation League of Connecticut and is secretary to the Melanie Ilene Rieger Foundation, an organization that fights violent crime and assists survivors of homicide victims, with an annual two-day state seminar on violence held each April.

Allyne was active in the B’nai Birth Youth Organization, the B’nai Shalom Synagogue, and was treasurer for former Waterbury Mayor Bergin’s campaigns and for State Representative Jeff Berger’s campaigns.

Allyne also worked in her husband’s CPA office for many years. Now deceased, Milton Kadish was the last treasurer of the City of Waterbury. 

The couple’s two children and their spouses are now retired from the education field.

 

TOM KMETZO – Middlebury
Tom has taught at Canterbury School, The Hill School, Clarkson University, The University of New Hampshire, and Notre Dame International School in Rome. Tom retired in 1999 as Professor of Humanities and Communications Chair at Naugatuck Valley Community College where he also taught English and Philosophy for 30 years. He was an NEH Fellow in Philosophy at the University of Hawaii and a Mellon Fellow in the English Department at Yale in the Visiting Faculty Program. He has an A.B. in English from Fairfield, and an M.A. in English from the University of Iowa.

He has worked at Mystic Seaport Museum as a chantey singer, tall ship sail-setter and interpreter in the small boat shop.  He has sung with the Yale Russian Chorus for 33 years with performances in Russian opera at Carnegie Hall and A Prairie Home Companion.  He also sings with the Oblate Choir at the Abbey of Regina Laudis, and is an interpretive guide at Topsmead State Forest in Litchfield.


JUDY KOLLIAS – Cheshire
Judy has a BA and MA in Spanish and a Sixth Year degree. She taught Spanish language, literature and culture at Cheshire High School and Quinnipiac University.

Judy has traveled extensively in Europe and the Spanish speaking world. She was a docent at the Yale Center for British Art for ten years where she gave tours in both English and Spanish. She is now a docent at the Mattatuck Museum. Judy is an English language conversation tutor at Literacy Volunteers of Greater Waterbury and President of the Board of Directors of the organization which strives to improve the English language skills of adult learners.

Because of the professional leadership at OLLI and its outstanding course offerings, Judy has decided to become actively involved in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UConn, Waterbury.

 

MARY-LOUISE REIGNIER – Wolcott
Mary Louise Reignier is a graduate of the UConn BGS Program (which changed her life). She holds a Masters Degree from Sacred Heart University. Currently, Mary Louise is a social studies teacher at Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury.  Her courses include Asian Studies, Global Studies and Honors World History.  At Sacred Heart she has been involved as Co-Admissions Director, Class Advisor, student trip coordinator and Program Chairperson for the New England Association of High School Evaluations. This year, she is coordinating a student trip to Japan.

She has received grants from AIG and the Freeman Foundation at Cambridge, Massachusetts to study China. These studies culminated in a trip with educators to China. The grant from Critical Languages and Area Studies allowed her to further her studies at Hampshire College. Travels in Mongolia, Russia, Morocco and China were all part of her study on education in these countries.

Her interest in traveling has always been to bring new and interesting material back to her students because she firmly believes you have to be interesting and excited about the sharing of information in order for students to connect.

Mary Louise is married to Lou Reignier and they have two great children, Michelle and Pierce and two super (but, of course) grandchilden: Lou Lou and Ben. 

 

MURIEL SOLOMON – Waterbury
Muriel Solomon is a native of Waterbury and attended Waterbury public schools.  She graduated from what was Teachers College in New Britain, CT – now called Central Connecticut State University.  Muriel taught at and retired from Crosby High School. She was also an advisor to a local girl’s sorority as well as a Girl Scout leader.  During that time, she was also an active member in the PTA at her children’s school.  She is also a member of her synagogue's governing board, and treasurer of the sisterhood.

 

CONNIE TRIPODI – Waterbury
Concetta Tripodi (Connie) was born in Caracas, Venezuela and came to the U.S. when she was ten.  A graduated of Central Connecticut State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Natural Sciences specializing in Medical Technology and a minor in Latin American Studies, she then completed medical training at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury. 
 
Connie also has a gemology degree from the Gemological Institute of America. She designs and creates jewelry inspired by the ancient Etruscans, Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians. She recently received an MBA in Health Care Management with a specialization in Global Management from the University of Phoenix and has a certification in Black Belt Six Sigma from Villanova University.  Connie has also been the office administrator of her husband's medical practice for the past 19 years. 

An OLLI presenter since the inaugural session, Connie has taught Jewelry Archaeology and Conversational Italian for Travel. She lives in Waterbury with her husband and five children and travels to Italy annually.

 

NANCY VIA - Prospect
Nancy Via is Professor Emeritus of Library Services from Southern Connecticut State University; her teaching faculty position included aspects of Reference Services and Library Instruction.  She holds a Bachelor of Science and a Masters in Library Science and a Sixth Year Diploma.  She developed and taught information literacy curriculum, developed web-based tutorials, and developed a virtual tour of the Buley Library.  Nancy also developed an internship program for students in the Graduate School of Library Science, called the Library Practicum Program. 

Nancy is a member of the American Library Association, the New England Library Association, the Connecticut Library Association, Phi Delta Kappa, and the Association of State/Local Histories.  She is an appointed member of the Prospect Library Board and is a board member of the Prospect Historical Society.  Other memberships include the American Legion Auxiliary, Friends of the Prospect Public Library and St. Anthony Ladies Guild.  Nancy is enthusiastic about OLLI and UConn and is particularly interested in partnership opportunities it affords.
